Healthcare Inspiration: 3 TED Talks for Prospective Nurses
Written by on February, 4, 2015.
"Nurses are the heart of healthcare." - Donna Wilk Cardillo
You walk down the street, look right, and notice a young woman pushing an elderly woman in a wheelchair. You turn your head the other way and catch sight of a teenage boy helping a frail man cross the road. You stop at your apartment building, head up the stairs, turn on the TV, and see a number of other people performing acts of kindness on the news.
You want to jump on the bandwagon and become a doer of good deeds, but where do you start?
You have little direction and haven't set any short- or long-term goals for your future. What could you possibly do to make a differe nce in the world? The answer is easy: become a nurse. Nurses offer patients of all ages the care, respect, and loving attention required to heal. A good nurse can light up a room and lift a patient's spirits.
If you're exploring nursing as a possible profession, here are three TED Talks to give you some inspiration and motivation to pursue a career as a caregiver.
1. "Can We Rewrite the DNA of the Healthcare System?" by Rebecca Onie
In Rebecca Onie's TED Talk, she asks one simple question: ca n we [healthcare professionals] rewrite the DNA of the healthcare system? To answer, one must first understand the current healthcare s ystem and how it affects nearly every person in the country.
Listen in as Onie helps her audience understand the current system. And, once she's finished explaining, you'll soon understand why she adamantly argues that healthcare professionals need to link healthcare with social services. Why? In order to allow more people the basic resources to heal.
This TED Talk will stimulate your mind and help you find courage and motivation to do your part in rewriting the DNA of the current healthcare system.
2. "Health Care Should Be a Team Sport" by Eric Dishman
Like Rebecca Onie, Eric Dishman believes the current healthcare system needs more caring individuals who offer more personalized s ervices. In his TED Talk, Dishman breaks down the current system and talks about the three pillars of personal health:
- Care anywhere
- Care networking
- Care customization
Although these three phrases-pillars-mean little to you now, once you listen to his TED Talk you'll gain a new understanding and ap preciation for a system that revolves around care. Tune in to see how you can incorporate some of Dishman's ideas into your future nurs ing mission statement.
3. "How to Find and Do Work You Love" by Scott Dinsmore
What makes you tick, excites you, and causes you to wake up each morning with a smile on your face and a skip in your step? What work do you know you-and perhaps only you-are capable of doing?
When Scott Dinsmore steps onto the TED stage, he clearly states his mission: He wants to "change the world by helping people find what excites them and build a career around the work only they are capable of doing."
Many prospective nurses feel passionate about healthcare but worry they aren't cut out for the job. In his TED Talk, Dinsmore helps listeners understand how they can put his t ools and methods into practice to pursue and stick with a career that excites, thrills, and maybe even terrifies you.
